Battlefield Play4Free Beta

Battlefield Play4Free, is it worth the download?

Hey everyone I’m Thomas aka Hoot, and I’m going to talk about Battlefield Play4Free. As you can probably get from the title this installment to the series is a Free to Play game. That means no purchase necessary at all to play, something many gamers will be thankful for. Alright now those introductions are out of the way let’s get down to the facts. I’ll be breaking this review down into a couple categories: New Features, Gameplay, Pros, and Cons. Before we do though, it is important to remember that this is still a beta. So if you do decide to go apply to be in the beta, please remember that.

New Features

Besides booting up the game from an internet browser, the first thing I notice that was new to the series was Character Design. This is extremely new thing for the BF series. Before you even boot up the game you have to choose a class that you will level up as you play. You have four options: Sniper, Assault, Engineer, and Medic. Once you pick your class you can do some slight customization to your characters face. This ranges from skin color, hair color, hair style, and facial hair. It’s not much but it’s a big step up from no customization at all like in other Battlefield games. Next thing I noticed after starting up the game is that instead of earning weapons while ranking up you have to buy them with the credits you earn. Besides buying weapons, you can also by equipment and clothing to stand out from others on the battle field. Another new feature is what I can only describe as a talent tree. Kind of a weird thing to put in a first person shooter, but they did. It really works out nicely when it comes to vehicles in the game. For instance, you have to place a training point in a certain vehicles slot on the tree in order to drive it or use any secondary weapons in it.

Game Play

Battlefield Play4Free plays just like other Battlefield games, with only a few game mechanics missing. Unlike most Battlefield games there is no Commander or Squads to join. The game has been stripped down to a straight up FPS, which isn’t really a bad thing considering that you don’t have to pay for it. The maps in the beta that I’ve played are all Battlefield 2 maps that have been tweaked and updated from the old maps. They also brought back the vehicles from the Battlefield 2 series. This includes the APCs, Tanks, Hummers, Boats, Helicopters, and Jet’s. The weapons and gadgets in the game have been brought from multiple Battlefield games. For instance the tracer dart from Battlefield Bad Company 2 has been put in the game to give ground troops a fighting chance against armor.

Cons

  • No Friends List
  • No squads
  • No Commanders
  • Some Connection Problems
  • Game Crashes Sometimes when alt-tabbing
  • Can't Choose Servers or Maps

Pros

  • Free
  • Easy to Play
  • Good Graphics
  • Plays Well
  • Big Maps
  • Large Teams
  • Character Customization
  • It's Free!

Over all Battlefield Play4Free is a great free download game. One of the few I’m willing to play over a game I actually paid for. There really isn’t anything to lose by trying it. This is definitely a good game for the gamer low on cash and just want’s something to keep their attention and have fun.

I would have to give this game 8.5 out of 10.
